The mechanism is particularly intended for wrapping and securing an adhesive tape around a wound coil held stationary in a coil winding machine and has a support which can rotate relative to the coil centre line and carries the tape reel. First guide means are provided to guide the tape immediately adjacent to the coil in a plane parallel to the coil centre line. Second guide means ar arranged at a short distance from the first such that, between the first and the second means the tape follows a first path at right angles to the coil centre line. The second means deflect the tape from a second path away from the reel, which path includes an angle, which may be as small as possible or even zero, with the coil centre line.
