End quench tests for through-hardening alloy steels - in which test-piece is inserted in heat insulating jacket

Device for the end-quench testing of samples made from high-alloy, through-hardening steels, establishes the hardenability and microstructure. During quenching, the side surface of the test-piece is surrounded by means which suppress the extn. of heat, pref. using a wall with low heat-transfer, esp. a multi-shell wall where the intermediate spaces are filled with insulating materials such as rock wool, glass wool, asbestos or air. A simple and rapid end-quench test, is achieved, the results of which can be reliably used to predict the behaviour of large workpieces such as thick plates.
