The McPherson strut has an inner sliding shaft (39) which is guided in a special bearing which can accommodate lateral forces without jamming. The bearing has a cylindrical sleeve (31) which is used to locate the shaft and has the sleeve supported on a membrane (33) whose outer edge is clamped at the edge of the strut, between the clamping blocks at the end of the strut. The membrane is only held at the edge and is free to move slightly over the rest of its area. This gives the bearing some axial, as well as radial movement. The bearing can be made with a multi-layer membrane clamped in the blocks, or it can be made in one section with the membrane.
