The top of a writing desk has recesses for receiving variable itens of office equipment. A punch (8) and stapler (7) are connected to the desk top to two different edges of the desk top, pref. opposite edges. The punch and stapler may be fixed to the top by mating projections and recesses. Beneath the punch may be a leaf, drawer (14), etc. for collecting waste from the punch, with a pencil sharpener in the end wall of the drawer with its outlet opening extending into the drawer. In the centre of the desk top may be a recess (5) for pieces of paper, and at the front between the punch and stapler may be an elongate channel (3) for pen holders etc. In the dividing web (41) between the elongate channel and centre recess is a cup-shaped recess (43).
