The four-stroke combustion engine, particularly motor vehicle engine, with external ignition (9) runs on fuel mixture, whereby the major part of the inlet charge is admitted into the main combustion chamber (3) as a leam mixture via an inlet valve (4) and the remainder as a rich mixture via an additional inlet (22) to a pre-combustion chamber (8) containing a sparking plug (9). Inside the valve (4) controlling inlet to the main chamber, means such as a coaxial piston (6) or slide valve are provided which control the supply of rich mixture, the valve (4) sliding on these means. The piston (6) may be provided with ducts (13, 14, 23) connecting with a chamber (15) in the valve head (19).
