The mechanism for removing threaded bung from beer barrels, has a composite frame (11) mounted above a conveyor (2) carrying the barrels. A lower fixed frame (12) carried positioning rollers (21, 22) driven by a pneumatic cylinder (23) and a pneumatic motor (25). The barrel is then located under a bung-hole locating cap (26). An unscrewing head is then lowered by another cylinder and engages the bung by screwing into it. This is mounted on a frame (16) which can be raised and lowered. A horizontal cylinder is then operated to force open two jaws to grip the inside of the bung, which is then lifted and removed to a receiving position. A rotary head for inserting and screwing in a bung is also used.
