Water jet appts. includes a boom which is pivotable between a raised inoperative position and a lowered operative position aligned with a port in the elbow of a standpipe and which supports a carier moveable longitudinally of the boom. A water pipe extends longitudinally of an is rotatably supported by the carrier. A motor is provided on the carrier to rotate or oscillate the pipe in use. A swivel coupling connects the inboad end of the pipe to a valved line leading from the discharge side of a high press., high vol. pump. A valved recycle line extends between a supply tank of the pump and the pump discharge line. The other end of the pipe extends beyond the carrier and is provided with =2 nozzles from which, in use, diverging, water jets issue to remove deposits from the interior of the standpipe and to clean the sealing surfaces of the porthole. Any surplus water delivered by the pump can be returned direct to the tank so that the pump can be left running. There is no risk of damage to standpipes, as in the case with mechanical cleaners, and gas-tight seals between the standpipe cleaning ports and their cover plates are ensured.
