A visual field scanning arrangement produces an electrical signal to represent the distribution of energy over the field. A Cardan-suspended rotor carries a multi-face scanning mirror on which incident light is directed by an objective lens system. The optical system is so designed that the optical axis of entry runs parallel to the axis of rotation of the rotor. The arrangement permits a compact design of a system e.g. for use on a stabilised platform in a vehicle or aircraft. The main parts of the rotor and the optical system can be combined in a single unit.
