A furnace is used for the investigation of the mechanical properties of materials at high temperature. It has an opening in its base to permit the application of a load to the sample. The sample (1) is supported on a pressure plate (4). A load is applied by means of a bolt (9) and brackets (10, 11) through an aperture in the furnace base plate (13). The pressure plate (4) stands on a support beam (4a) and a base tube (12). Heat is retained by insulating material (18, 14b). The sample may be surrounded by a heat shield (26) and the aperture in the base of the furnace may also have a heat shield (16) to inhibit thermal radiation.
