Contour line wave patterns are produced to represent the surface contours of three-dimensional objects. A light beam L1 is generated and interrupted periodically at a given frequency. The beam is converted into a light plane directed onto the object and this is deflected in a direction normal to the plane and the periodic interruption is continued to produce a grid pattern on the object. The grid pattern is superimposed with a standard grid to produce a wave pattern representing the surface contours of the object.
