The covering element for holes or niches in masonry, or similar openings, comprises an encompassing frame with four corner pieces movably linked by connecting pieces, and incorporating an inward protruding bearing surface for a closing piece. The visible face of this is a tile or panel similar to those on the surrounding area, borne by a base unit attachable to the frame, which is variable in size as required. The panel-shaped base unit (6) incorporates fracture points (11), one at least aligned parallel to one of its side edges (7, 9), and another at right angles to this. There is pref. a fracture point parallel to each of the four edges (7, 8, 9, 10), or more than one.
