A swashplate (16) is mounted on a spherical bearing (14). It drives an output shaft (12) through a crank and gear mechanism (40, 28, 28', 26, 26', 32). The swashplate and drive mechanism are contained within the spherical case (44). A shaft (50) which supports the case on the swashplate bearing also carries a partition (56) which divides the case into spaces (64, 66) which are evacuated and a space (60) which is open to the atmosphere. A control mechanism rotates the shaft (50) and with it the casing to vary the section of the swashplate exposed at atmospheric pressure. This causes the plate to rotate and produces a useful output.
