Brominated arc lamp black used for flame-proofing plastics - prepd. by reacting arc lamp black and bromine

Brominated arc lamp black, (I), contg. 10-30 wt. % bonded Br is new. (I) is pref. prepd. by exposing arc lamp black to the activity of 10-1000 wt. % Br2 at 20-200 degree C, opt. in the presence of an inert dispersant and/or solvent. (I), opt. together with other additives, is used for flameproofing plastics, e.g. polyolefins, PVC, polyesters, polyamides and elastomers. (i)(I) behaves as an active filler and does not impair the properties of plastics. Anti-electrostatic properties are improved. Dripping when burning is reduced, e.g. impact-resistant polystyrene contg. 10% (I) and 3% aromatic Br cpd. can be graded as self-extinguishing and non-dripping. (ii) (I) acts synergetically with other flameproofing agents.
