Amide gp-substd. (thio)hydantoins, (A), are prepd. by (a) reacting maleimides having formula (I) (where R1 and R2 are H or aliphatic gps. R5 is H or an opt. substd. aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, aromatic, aliphatic-aromatic or heterocyclic gp. and k is integer 1-3, esp. 1-2) with a prim. mono- or polyamide; (b) reacting the prod. with an organic mono- or polyiso(thio) cyanate and then (c) cyclising, by heating, opt. in the presence of catalysts. (A) can be built into heat-resistant polymers, e.g. by reaction with mono- or polycarboxylic acids, or into polyesters, by reaction with mono- or polyalcohols. Monohydantoins can be used as plant-protective agents or as pharmaceuticals. (A) can also be used as adhesives, foils, and moulded articles. (A) are obtd. smoothly, in high yields, and are stable to heat.
