The method is for counting electrical pulses when continuous counter output averaging is applicable to electronic digital counters by using bit-parallel or bit-serial averaging. It is designed to produce the average value at each measurement instant. A number of pulses entering a digital counter in a given time interval is summed and an exponentially varying average value formed in a processor. The data used as parameters for the measured quantity are the pulse frequency, the time interval, or both. The method results in a smoothing of the digital display as compared to individual value measurements.
