A storage rack consists of an array of cells contg. nuclear fuel assemblies, and an array of poison boxes contg. moderator material. The walls of the boxes are made of a neutron absorbing material. Each cell is immediately adjacent at least one poison box. Pref. each cell contacts an adjacent cell on at least one side. The rack is used for storing spent fuel assemblies in a water-filled pit. The arrangement maximises the number of assemblies which can be stored in a given vol., with a max. ratio of stored fuel to poison.
