Sand barrel foundation for heavy point loads - has small top surface area and larger bottom surface area

The sand barrel is used as a foundation for heavy point loads in loose and soft grounds. The sand barrel or box foundation principle is well established since ancient times. The present sand barrel carries high loads and it is readily installed. It is made of sheet metal and it has no bottom. The top opening is much smaller than the bottom cross sectional area. The transition from the top to the bottom slopes to match the angle of repose of the sand used. Anchoring bolts and plates for accommodating lifting forces can be included. The load acting on top is distributed over a wide surface area of the barrel bottom.
