The ship has its superstructure movable relative to the upper deck to minimise the stress imposed on crew and passengers by ship motion in a seaway and by machinery noise or vibration. Ship and cargo handling can also be made easier. Some of the superstructure elements are mounted on a longitudinal and tranverse rail system. This may be in one plane, or involve an intermediate platform for the transverse rails. The rail mountings include vibration dampers. The superstructure elements are lockable in the desired position, and may be powered mechanically, electrically or hydraulically.
