A layer composition for underground- irrigated and drained sports and athletic grounds and other green areas, comprises a cover layer (3a), a dynamic layer (3b), a bearing layer and a filter layer, the bearing and filter layers being combined together into a single composite layer (3c) of granular material, such as lava or slag material. Embedded in the composite layer is a water-distribution pipe network system (6, 7, 8, 9 and 10a-d). The composite layer is divided by the pipe network into areas of equal size. The pipe network consists of a peripheral drainage main (6), and an irrigation conduit (7) fed by pipes (10a- d) from a feed duct (9) connected at 8 to a water supply.
