Method comprises removing activated sludge from an aerated stock bin and contacting the activated sludge with the waste water to be tested. O2 consumption in the waste water/activated sludge mixt. is measured over a pre-set time. The waste water/activated sludge is returned to the stock bin. After a pre-set time in stock bin, the mixt. is re-combined with waste water, to measure O2 consumption. Apparatus for detecting bacteria damaging waste water components, by measuring the biological activity of waste water-mixed activated sludge, is also claimed. The waste waters can be tested before charging to a biological clarifying plant, to detect both acute and slow-acting bacteria-damaging components. The plant works independently of activated sludge supply and clarifying plant.
