The overload prevention device for chains uses at least one safety component for indicating excess load, the component (1, 2) having at least one nominal break point. By unloading at least two chain links (16, 16'), the safety component is fitted on the chain. The nominal break point is formed by a cross-sectional narrowing of the safety component. The overload prevention unit comprises safety components connected to each other by at least one bolt (3, 3'), between which the chain links unloaded from tractive force are arranged. Each safety component has at least one location for the unloaded chain links, and both links, which are arranged at the ends of the chain section, locate on counter surfaces (17, 17') of the safety components.
