The fuel consumption meter consists of a conventional carburettor (2) to which is connected a vacuum gauge (6) at the narrowest point in the venturi tube of the air inlet (3). A transducer (7) produces an electrical signal which is proportional to the square of the air throughput, which in turn is proportional to the fuel consumption. The signal is fed to divider (8) which also receives a signal (9 which is proportional to vehicle speed. The result of the computation by the divider stage is in the form of an electrical signal (10) which represents the fuel consumption per unit of distance travelled by the vehicle, e.g. per 100 km. This is displayed on an indicator (11). The case of constant-pressure type carburretors, the take off point for vacuum measurement is positioned between the throttle butterfly and the needle valve assembly.
