The roller bearings, eg ball bearings(4) have a pair of rods(8) located in a reces in each of the guide rails(1) which run parallel to one another. At least one of the rods has braking surfaces(11) to either side of its rolling track surface(6). The track has a cylindrical shape whose radius(R2), when the rod is not under load, is less than the radius(R) of the roller bearing. The design provides the linear guide with self-damping characteristics.
