The captive balloon for atmospheric pollution monitoring is pref. a hot air balloon having a burner with catalytic ignition. Alternatively, the balloon can be supplied with hot gas from the gbround. It carries a lightweight gas hose terminating at ground level in two pipes linked by a universal joint. One of these pipes is fixed to the mooring structure, and the other stores spare hose formed as a concertina to prevent kinking. A second hose runs from the balloon basket to a monitoring unit on the ground. A pump, electrically driven either via a ground lead (18) or by a battery, feeds ambient air down this hose.
