A gyroscope surveying compass uses an internally-suspended gyroscope package with optically linked read-out facilities. The design allows operation independently of a theodolite. The internal package is suspended by a single band from a suitable point inside a roughly cylindrical multiple layer outer shell. The whole unit is mounted with adjustable screws on a stand, and adjustment can be made to the gyroscope bearings, the movement limit stops and other elements. Owing to the suspension arrangement the gyroscope, which rotates about a horizontal axis, hangs vertically, and optical outputs are taken via a mirror assisted track from the gyroscope package. A number of warning and limit switching display facilities are provided.
