A coil winding machine is used which will take small plastics formers without damaging the joint between the flange and the main body of the former. This is achieved by balancing the stresses along the longitudinal axis during the winding process by an externally applied stress in the opposite direction. The external forces are applied to the unwound former (1) which has flanges (3, 4) at both ends. The forces will be applied during the winding process along the longitudinal axis of the former and act inwards. The force is exercised by a tensioning device such as a mandrel (7). The mandrel is fitted to a threaded rod (10) and can therefore be adjusted.
