Natural and/or synthetic rubber sulphur vulcanisation - accelerated by using organic cobalt salt as only vulcanisation promoter

S-vulcanisation of rubber (blends) partic. natural rubber and/or synthetic highly unsatd. elastomers, e.g. cis-1,4-polyisoprene, is accelerated by adding pref. =0.1(1-10) esp. 5 wt.% w.r.t. elastomer(s) of a rubber-soluble organic Co salt in the absence of standard vulcanisation accelerators. The vulcanisates are used in the mfr. of tyres, sheets and belts, etc. contg. metal, esp. steel inserts, and partic. in rubberising steel cord. Use of the Co salts reduces vulcanisate sensitivity to reversion. The vulcanisation adhere well to textiles and metals; protect metals against corrosion; and have high moduli, hardness, tear-strength, notch impact strength and resilience. On using the Co salts, natural rubber can be masticated without adding the usual masticating agent.
