The range measuring instrument makes use of a transmitting and receiving device for h.f. and l.f. signals. The device combines a high-frequency transmitter (10), a low-frequency receiver (18) and a transit-time measuring instrument (19). A reflection unit is also used which consists of a high-frequency receiver (14) and a low-frequency transmitter (15). The high-frequency transmitter and high-frequency receiver operate in the ultra-short wave range. The low-frequency receiver and low-frequency transmitter operate in the ultrasonic range.
