Section insulator contains glass fibre rod in polyfluorocarbon tube - and transition layer, e.g. of poly-di:methyl-siloxane!; used esp. for HT power lines

Section insulator, esp. for high voltage power lines, contains a thermoplastic fluorocarbon polymer tube seated, with radical prestressing, on glass fibre rod which is provided with terminal metallic suspension fittings. A transition layer, between inner surface of tube and surface of rod, diffuses into both surface of fluorocarbon polymer tube and glass fibre rod. The assembly combines high internal dielectric strength and resistance to weathering under working conditions. The transition layer may be an etched layer produced by coating inner surface of the tube with a soln. of metallic Na in liq. anhydrous NH3. The layer may also be produced with an etching the soln. of metallic Na, naphthalene and THF. The tube may be of PTFE and the glass fibre rod may contain epoxy resin binder.
