To facilitate access to the teeth, the lips and cheeks are held by a device made of spring wire. The device has two limbs which are inter-connected outside the mouth, each limb having a V-shaped portion (1) that extends along the teeth. The ends (7, 8) of each portion (1) bias the lips apart to the desired extent. The lower limb (2) of each portion (1) may include suction openings connected to an inner conduit and to an outlet for removing saliva. A suction tube which extends under the tongue can also be attached to the limb (2).
