The horizontal brush of the car wash is mounted between vertical guides in the travelling portal, with its own drive motor. One of the guides is on a sprung pivot so that it is displaced by the pressure on the vehicle. The displacement operates the forward travel of the portal. The reaction force of the brush is thus easily monitored. The guide is pivoted at the bottom and is held in the mid position by horizontally opposing springs near the top.
