The water inlet for a ship's water pump has a special acoustic damper in which the water column is broken by an air space. The latter is controlled by compressed air admitted through control valves and vented through pressure relief valves. The damper has a weir over which the inlet water spills to maintain the supply. The damper enables warships to operate quietly with less chance of being detected or of triggering acoustic mines.
