The i/c engine has a mixture suction intake with at least one plate valve in every chamber. This valve executes a consistent opening stroke for mixture input. The input flow is subject to throttling which varies according to load needs and is separate for each chamber. It is effected by a throttle screen arranged concentrically to the valve shaft, and movable axially to the valve plate by means of a displacement drive. The throttle screen (16) is so coupled to the valve shaft (7) and the drive that it executes on a timed basis the opening stroke (h) of the plate valve (6), and the distance of the screen (16) from the valve plate (8) is variable dependent upon the controlled engine load.
