The pollution reduction system for a multi-cylinder internal combustion engine has one group of cylinders with a relatively weak fuel/air mixture interconnected with a second group of cylinders with a relatively rich fuel/air mixture so that the exhaust gases are discharged through a selective catalyst. Each group of cylinders is formed by individual cylinders in a successive firing order. The fuel injection system includes an air proportioning device for each fuel injection valve so that the weak mixture is ensured for the first group, and a rich mixture for the second group.
