The piston engine is for operation with steam heated to above a critical level, the steam being produced in a force circulation boiler, fed to at least one cylinder, and after expansion is condensed in a condensor. On entry into the cylinder, the steam passes unthrottled into an inlet control valve. This valve has a control piston which is motivated by the pressure present in the cylinder, and is directly connected via a lever assembly to a valve piston controlling the inlet of steam into the cylinder. A direct steam driven differential piston twin pump is used to produce the working of the engine.
