Prepn. of mono or dicarboxylic acid esters with aliphatic alcohols and ammonium sulphate comprises reacting at elevated temp. the corresp. acid amides with an alcohol, and sulphur acid and/or ammonium bisulphate using 0.3-0.6 mole sulphuric acid or 0.6-1.2 mole of bisulphate and 1-6 moles of alcohol per equiv. of acid amide. The process uses much less sulphuric acid than the normal, and it can be carried out using ammonium bisulphate, usually regarded as an undesirable waste by-product, to give the esters and the ammonium sulphate free of bisulphate.
