Photo-electric sensors operating in conjunction with a counter provides a means of checking coin denominations in sorting machine and providing an automatic release mechanism. Coins entered through a slot pass over a photo sensor. The coins drop onto a balance that reacts to the required weight. Correct coins are passed to an output chute that has a second photosensor. Coins that are too small fall into a reject chute. A counter is preset to control the number of coins in the chute and a gate coupled with a timing stage ensure that the release is operated at the correct point.
