The advancing shield tunnelling machine with the cutters (10) at the front advanced by hydraulic rams (11) has two anchorage plates (26) mounted behind this section. These are large area curved plates, one each side, matching the curvature of the tunnel lining plates (17) which are attached by the machine. Each plate is pushed outwards against curved shoes (28) top and bottom. At the forward end of the anchorage plates (26) project dumb-bell shaped slide members (27) which travel in slides (24) mounted on the front part (10) of the machine.
