The relay has a excitation coil with associated iron circuit. The coil (1) surrounds coaxially a part of the iron circuit, leaving an annular gap (5). This circuit part consists of two identical rods (3, 4) held at protruding ends by spring (11) in mutual abutment. The rods are used for actuating the relay contacts (14, 15). The iron circuit part outside the excitation coil consists of at least one U-shaped rail (6, 7) whose middle shank (8) reaches over the excitation coil in axial direction. The rail free shanks (9) extend over the faces of the coil. This configuration enclses a space (10), matching the inner diameter of the coil winding, which extends at right angles to the contact plane of the rods.
