The system measures the length of oblong items, particularly cable or pipe, during production, making marks on them. With the aid of a suitable mechanism (20) a mark, readable without contact (11), is made on the surface of the item (10). After travelling for an accurately measured distance (LE) this mark is read, the reading impulse forming the signal for a further marking operation (12) to be carried out. At a greater distance, representing a multiple (XLE) of the measured distance, the mark can be read agan, the impulse causing a control mark to be made.
