The slab is subjected to =2 passes through pairs of grooved work rolls which produce several billets joined together by longitudinal webs which can subsequently be cut, e.g. by oxygen burners, to form separate billets. The rooling passes produce successively deeper lontigudinal grooves in the slab, thereby creating longitudinal tensile stresses in the slab; and the successive passes convert these stresses into longitudinal compressive stresses by controlled displacement of the slab by the ribs on the work rolls. A relative wide slab obtd. from a single track continuous casting plant can be rapidly and inexpensively converted into several billets without creating surface defects in the billets attributable to high tensile stresses occurring during rolling.
