Water glass (a) is mixed with a cement (b) which contains by wt. =50% aluminous cement, and using a mixing ratio a:b of between 20:1 and 1:20 by wt., esp. between 1:4 and 4:1. Cement (b) pref. contains (=90) aluminous cement. The mass (a, b) may be mixed with conventional organic and/or inorganic fillers, using 0.5-500 pts. wt. fillers per 100 pts. wt. of the mass (a, b). The mass is pref. used as a filler or knife putty; for casting to fill gaps; as a coating or facing paint; refractory cement; or as a binding mortar. A mixt. (a, b) remains workable for 1 hr., during which time only moderate increase in viscosity occurs. The mass then hardens uniformly, even in thick layers, to achieve hgih hardness and an ability to withstand high mechanical loads.
