The anchor bolt for lifting concrete slabs is embedded in the concrete during manufacture of the slab. It has a cylindrical head (14) which projects above the surface so that a lifting device (19) can be inserted. The stem (13) has a bar passing through the bottom to assist anchorage. An anchor bolt can be embedded in each corner of a flat plate or two bolts can be positioned with their heads flush with the edge of the plate, and located in recesses. This enables the plate to be lifted edgewise, and the recesses allow the lifting devices to be inserted. The lifting member can be made from rod and bent into a U shape (25) and attached to a base plate (19) with a slot so that it can slide under the head. Methods of using lifting chains and bars are shown.
