Sulphuric acid and anhydrous sodium sulphate are sepd. from the effluent of a chlorine dioxide generator by adding an alcohol or ketone, with 5-50 vol.% H2O, to adjust the effluent normality to =4 w.r.t. H2SO4 and precipitate anhydrous sodium sulphate. The mother liquor is distilled to remove the organic cpd. and H2SO4 is recovered from the still bottoms. Method is used in acid and salt cake recovery from a ClO2 generator operating at an acid normality of 6-11. The method can be used with existing generator equipment and without radically altering operating conditions.
