Composite components made by cold pressure butt welding - esp. aluminium cathode carrier rods with copper connector heads

The weld is made by applying axial pressure to the butt joint between two workpieces, to create plastic flow and bonding. One piece is pref. a drawn rod made of 99.5% Al, the other piece is a head formed by casting, drawing or welding, and made of 99.5% electrolytic copper. At least one of the pieces is pref. hardened in the region of its joint surface, esp. by exposure to a steel-wire brush. The welding pressure is pref. applied in a series of steps producing a bulge at the joint, the bulge increasing in size after each step. The back end of the piece with higher porosity is pref. supported by a thrust surface during welding. A pore-free butt welding resistant to corrosion is obtd. between the pieces.
