The step to be made for a staircase has reinforcement, such as wire, bar or cable, running round inside parallel to its periphery, inserted after construction of the main piece with the external step shape, into a cutout in this which is subsequently filled with synthetic resin or other filler substance. For this purpose a peripheral saw cut (13) is made in the main step piece, as recess for the inlaid reinforcement (10). The latter may be inserted in a series of parallel layers. The visible edge of the filler substance may be polished when it has set hard.
