Machine for profile bevelling spectacle lenses - has combined roughing and finishing wheel with cam positioned guide for manual grinding

The machine is used for profile bevelling the edges of spectacle lenses, rough and finish grinding being effected manually. A combined roughing and finishing diamond wheel is used, mounted (8) on a vertical shaft and rotated by a motor (10). A guide ring (1) fits over the wheel, being moved axially by a lever operated cam (2, 6) on the machine housing (1b). The lens is first marked out and the guide lowered to expose the roughing wheel (1a), being used as a rest together with a stop. The guide is then raised to expose only the finishing wheel (2a), a groove (3a) forming the rib around the lens.
