Long spars and scrap wood are conveyed to a transport device (1) which passes through a vat of water. A detector (4) establishes the presence of large foreign bodies. Both are disintegrated in a drum chipper (5). Slices being carried over a magnet (8) and then into a washing machine (9) for foreign body removal. After drying, cleaned slices are delivered to a sorter for division into three grades bysize. The largest may be re-chipped, magnetically treated and washed. The middle size is conveyed in measured quantities to a slice chipper and storage silo. The smallest slices pass into a sawdust mill and thence to another silo.
