The thermal typing unit has a typing hed with individually-controlled typing points and a paper transport mechanism. The head is stationary, having a row of points extending over the entire typing width. Each point is individually controlled by a microprocessor. The points can be in the form of thick film resistances on a ceramic substratum, the interval between adjacent points being between 0.15 and 0.4 mm. The points can be arranged in two parallel rows, spaced for half the interval between points in each row in the lengthwise direction of the latter.
