The photographic flash system, obtains a control value by carrying out a test illumination, this control value being stored for comparison. The test illumination is carried out using variable test lamps associated with the respective flash lamps with a light-metering device selectively coupled to the test or flash illumination control circuits. The test illumination control circuit is also coupled to a light-metering device in the vicinity of the object being photographed and to switches for selecting the film sensitivity and the shutter setting.
